Description
The E51 features what’s called a Quad-Cat system, meaning there are four catalytic converters in total—two for Bank 1 of the V6 engine and another two for Bank 2. This applies to both the VQ25 2.5L and VQ35 3.5L engines.
The problem with this system is that, over time, the first catalytic converters from each bank can degrade and break down. The debris from the broken ceramic material can then block the secondary catalytic converters further down the exhaust. Once a blockage occurs, it causes pressure build-up, which can lead to exhaust gases and debris backflowing into the engine, potentially causing severe engine damage.
